Middlemarch (1994)
Middlemarch is a television adaptation of the 1871 novel of the same name by George Eliot. Produced by the BBC and aired on BBC2, it consists of six episodes (seven episodes in the worldwide TV series). The adaptation was directed by Anthony Page and written by Andrew Davies. The cast includes Juliet Aubrey as Dorothea Brooke, Rufus Sewell, Douglas Hodge, and Patrick Malahide.
The series costume design was by Anushia Nieradzik. The costumes in Middlemarch reflect the early 19th century style with details like short-waisted coats for men and fine jewellery among the women.
The plot centers on Dorothea Brooke, who marries the pedantic Reverend Edward Casaubon, a man twice her age. The marriage proves unsatisfying and ends with Casaubon’s unexpected death. While still married, Dorothea meets Will Ladislaw, leading to further complications.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lydgate faces financial difficulties and local political pressures while pursuing ambitious plans for a hospital. The series captures provincial life on the brink of momentous change during the Industrial Revolution.
The adaptation received critical acclaim and garnered awards, including Best Actress for Juliet Aubrey at the British Academy Television Awards. It also sparked a mini-craze for Victorian fiction in Britain, with Middlemarch lectures, comics and debates.
